Amputation After an Accident in Greater Manchester – What to Expect
9/8/20253 min read
Losing a limb or part of your body in an accident is devastating. The physical trauma is only the beginning — there’s also psychological shock, long-term pain, and often a complete upheaval of your life, career, and finances.
If you or a loved one have suffered an amputation following a serious accident, this article explains what to expect — and how a solicitor who understands the full picture can take the pressure off so you can focus on recovery.
A Real Case: Mr K’s Story
Mr K was involved in a serious motorbike accident and was rushed to hospital with catastrophic injuries to his foot. Despite emergency efforts to save his toes — including the insertion of metal rods into each one — all 5 on one foot were ultimately lost requiring a planned amputation.
A friend of Mr K recommended he contact me while he was still recovering in hospital. What followed was a complex but highly personal journey — one that involved not just fighting for compensation, but supporting a human being through trauma, rehab, and the adjustment to a new way of life.
What Most People Don’t Realise After Amputation
Many people don’t realise what a serious injury claim actually covers. It’s not just about medical bills — it’s about rebuilding a life:
Interim payments: Within 4 weeks, I secured urgent payments to help Mr K cover his household bills. He’d lost his job and had no savings. His family home was at risk.
Nine different experts: We involved neurologists, psychologists, surgeons, pain consultants, occupational therapists, orthopaedic specialists, and planning experts. Each with their own specialist input in how to get Mr K pain free and mobile as soon as possible.
Specialist orthotics: Mr K was fitted with two sets of custom silicone toes — one for summer, one for winter. These needed replacing every 7 years, for life. We recovered the full cost for the duration of his life expectancy.
Adapted footwear: His amputated toes could no longer fit standard width shoes. New, orthopaedic-compatible shoes were required, again claimed for 2 pairs a year for the duration of his liffe expectancy.
Phantom pain: Even after nerves were severed, the phantom pain was excruciating. He tried everything — chilli creams, patches, nerve blockers, psychotherapy with a combination of those settling his pain to managable levels.
PTSD and depression: Understandably, the mental toll was huge. I arranged psychological assessments and ensured emotional trauma was fully accounted for in his claim. This included the provision for CBT treatment.
Adaptations: His home now includes a downstairs wet room. These changes were designed and funded as part of the claim.
Independence: While unable to return to work, he regained freedom with an automatic car, also considered in the claim.
Taking the Burden Off You
My role went far beyond paperwork. I coordinated rehab appointments, medical assessments, and legal documents so that Mr K didn’t have to worry about the process. He could focus on his health and family.
He was especially relieved that interim payments kept his household going during the hardest months. While the claim may have been worth more, he chose to settle early and try to move forward with his life.
